The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) Spotlight: Dren Kika

What is your educational and professional background?

Having recently graduated from the University of Prishtina with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, at the moment I am a graduate student actively pursuing different pathways to further enhance my academic future abroad. On top of my college life, I also have valuable experience in online journalism.

Why did you choose to apply for the UGRAD Program?

The Global UGRAD Program presented me with an excellent opportunity to challenge my abilities away from home. Apart from the academic perspective, it also made it possible for me to go through a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the best country in the world.

Tell us about your experience as a student in the U.S.

It truly was the time of my life. As scary as it might seem at first to be away from your family for a considerable period across the ocean, it is undoubtedly worth it. I witnessed firsthand the education system in the U.S. and the amazing opportunities it provides for its students. It was a top-notch experience all around, meeting so many people from around the world and developing lasting friendships.

What is the most valuable component you have gained from the program?

Persistence. It can be difficult and pretty challenging to adapt to a completely new environment and education system, but you quickly learn to be persistent and very demanding. While I was very low on confidence when I first set foot in the U.S., it took me a couple of weeks to convince myself that I wasn't there on a fluke. Persistence is of paramount importance in demanding environments such as exchange semesters. You put your head down and keep on going, no matter what the hurdles.

How did you implement the knowledge gained from the program at your home institution and home country?

The best qualities I managed to acquire during my time in the U.S. had to do with research skills, especially learning where and how to use data concerning different topics. While writing my final thesis back home, I employed many skills and websites I used at my host university.

How was the application process for you, and what tips do you have for the prospective candidates?

The application process is very smooth and comprehensive. My advice would be to really tell the story behind who you are and what you seek to ultimately achieve in the States.

Don't be shy to share your goals and dreams!

What is the biggest culture shock you experienced while in the U.S.?

Students wearing pajamas and Crocs to classes! In general, students are much more casual and easygoing in the States compared to back home. Headphones and skateboards are allowed in class too…

What is your favorite place you have visited while participating in the Global UGRAD program?

Washington, D.C., and Miami.

About the first one, it's the heart of American democracy. Monuments, roads, parks, and buildings of such a rare city stick with you for a long time. As for Miami, it's just a completely different part of America, culturally and demographically unrecognizable from the rest of the country. The tourists, the beaches, the food. The basketball. A ten out of ten.

What is your favorite American dish/food?

Technically, it's Mexican, but Chipotle all day long.
